Celebrate the fall harvest by sampling some healthy snacks and sharing treats with some furry animal guests. We will also paint with apples and enjoy a nature walk. No siblings except infants in baby carriers. Only one caregiver per child will be admitted into the classroom. Space is limited.

Fall Harvest

Fall is filled with many colors and tastes during Harvest Time! Share a fall-themed book, taste some favorite fall foods, and feed some apple slices to APEC’s guinea pigs and rabbits. Vet Tech 101 - Teeth and Beaks
Saturday, September 28th | 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Join us for this Vet Tech class focusing on dental and beak health! Students will learn about how healthy mouth parts can lead to longer and happier lives, what contributes to healthy dentition and beaks, and what disorders or illnesses our animals may suffer from if they do not receive regular maintenance. They will also learn how to check to make sure the animals are receiving the right kind of dental care by giving them examinations. Space is limited.

Queer Birders Walk
Saturday, October 19th | 9:00 am - 10:30 am
Join NYC Queer Birders for a guided walk on the trails at Alley Pond Environmental Center to kick off the Fall! We started in February 2020 to cultivate community and explore the natural world with LGBTQA+ bird-lovers. If you love birds, meeting new people, and spending time outside in a queer-friendly setting, we would love to have you join us! We welcome all bird enthusiasts, regardless of experience. Space is limited.

Vet Tech 101 - Invertebrates
Saturday, October 19th | 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
In keeping various exotics, we also must deal with insects and other creepy crawlies here at APEC! Join us for a fun invertebrate investigation lab to look at the various “bugs” we have. Students will use observation tools to study live invertebrates and will learn about their relationships with some of our animal ambassadors. Space is limited.

Busy, Busy Squirrels
Sunday, October 20th | 9:30 am - 10:30 am
Fall is a frenzy of activity for our cute squirrel friends. Has your toddler ever wondered why they are so busy? Read The Busy Little Squirrel to learn more about these cute creatures. Toddlers will also observe and touch a squirrel relative-a chinchilla! Take a short walk in the park looking for squirrels, acorns, and squirrel nests. No siblings except infants in baby carriers. Only one caregiver per child will be admitted into the classroom. Space is limited.

Animals in Fall

Curious to find out why squirrels are scurrying around with acorns? Wonder why the geese can been seen flying in a V-shape in the sky? Find out how some local forest animals are preparing for winter at APEC. Enjoy a story, nature walk, and create a craft decorated with fall colors. We will also meet 3 live animal guests. Only one caregiver per child will be admitted into the classroom. Space is limited.

Storytime Spooktacular
Saturday, October 26th | 9:15 am - 12:00 pm
Come in costume and enjoy free SPOOKTACULAR events at APEC! Interactive activities, a photo shoot with a creepy crawly, and a Halloween Storytime every half hour. Each story time will include a game, live animal encounter, and songs. We will include a “Guess the Weight of the Pumpkin” game, and the winner will receive a private animal meet and greet for six friends and family members, to be scheduled for a later date. First 30 guests will leave with a mini-pumpkin!
Storytimes will run at 9:30, 10:00, 10:30, 11:00 and 11:30 am. Each story time will hold 10 families. For Ages 2-5, with one adult | FREE & No Registration Required Storytime spots are limited and are first-come, first served |
Meditation & Reiki Workshop
Saturday, November 16th | 9:30 am - 11:00 am
Are you interested in meditation but don't know where to begin? Can’t quiet your mind? Want to reduce stress in your life? Join Sonia, a certified Reiki Master Practitioner and Teacher at Alley Pond for an introduction to Meditation and Reiki workshop. Each participant will be given tools and strategies to implement in their own daily life. Reiki is an alternative method of relaxation and is offered through light, non-invasive touch with the practitioner's hands placed and held on a series of locations on the head and shoulders. Come take the first step in your mediation journey at Alley Pond! All levels and backgrounds are welcome. Space is limited.

Vet Tech 101 - Nutrition
Saturday, November 16th | 10:30 am - 12:30 pm
Students will focus on the nutritional needs of our animals and optimal dietary choices for body weight, bone health, and organ health. They will also learn how to check to make sure the animals are receiving the right amount of nutrition by giving them examinations and will feed a variety of animals in our care. Space is limited.

Animal Care Trainee - December
Sunday, December 8th | 10:30 am - 12:30 pm
Would you like to help us care for APEC’s animals? This program introduces children to the unique responsibility of being an animal caretaker. Participants will learn about the needs of our animal ambassadors, and gain hands-on experience in feeding, brushing, and cleaning them. They will also learn the first steps of researching and understanding what animal is best fit for lifestyle and family. Space is limited.

Intro to Vet Techs
Saturday, December 14th | 10:30 am - 12:30 pm
A brief introduction to veterinary science: animal terminology, behavior, and handling. Vet technicians, specifically, oversee many tasks around a vet clinic and work closely with their patients. Children will learn about the different types of patients that vets provide care for and will practice with some of the tools they use. Our Vet Tech students will learn the ins and outs of keeping some of the most common pet animals in peak medical condition. Space is limited.

The environmental center is located in Alley Pond Park, surrounded by lush nature trails where visitors can enjoy NYC's natural landscapes.
