Animal Tales: April Showers

April Showers bring all kinds of wonderful flowers! Flowers of yellow, red, and even blue. We’ll sing some springtime songs, meet two animals and go on a scavenger hunt outside in the park. No siblings except babies in carriers or car seats. Space is limited.

Vet Tech 101 - Invertebrates
Wednesday, April 24th | 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
In keeping various exotics, we also must deal with insects and other creepy crawlies here at APEC! Join us for a fun invertebrate investigation lab to look at the various “bugs” we have. Students will use observation tools to study live invertebrates and will learn about their relationships with some of our animal ambassadors. Space is limited.

Animal Storytime

I Love Animals!

Celebrate your child’s love of animals at APEC! Toddlers will enjoy listening to an animal story and observing 3 animal guests close-up. We will also make a delicious treat to share with our animal guests! No siblings except babies in carriers or car seats. Space is limited.

Vet Tech 101 - Rabbits
Thursday, April 25th | 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Are you interested in exploring the anatomy of rabbits, their behavior, diet, and needs that a vet technician would know about? Students will meet and care for a variety of our bunnies and discover differences between wild and domesticated rabbits as well. It is also an opportunity to get crafty and DIY some simple toys for them to play with. Space is limited.

Vet Tech 101 - Intelligence
Friday, April 26th | 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Come join us for this Vet Tech class focusing on intelligence! Students will get to learn about different forms of intelligence, which animals are smarter than others, and the cognitive needs of our animal ambassadors. Students will also learn how to check to make sure the animals are receiving proper mental stimulation by giving them examinations and providing enrichment. Space is limited.

Forest Therapy Walk
Saturday, April 27th | 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm
Join us for our first forest therapy immersion at our Northern Boulevard location! ANFT certified forest therapy guide, Linda Lombardo, will take us on a 90-minute wander through the trails, stopping at the pond and other points of interest, offering invitations that help connect us with Nature. The walk ends with a forest tea. Closed shoes and long pants are recommended. An organic tick repellent will be provided. Feel free to bring your own. Spots are limited.

All-Ages Spring Walk - City Nature Challenge
Monday, April 29th | 10:00 am - 11:30 am or 11:30 am - 1:00 pm
Join us to help observe and record different species on a guided walk around our trails! We will be using iNaturalist to document biodiversity like birds, plants, fungi, invertebrates, or other nature clues. These observations will contribute to the 2024 City Nature Challenge! Please bring a water bottle, weather appropriate clothes and shoes, and download the free iNaturalist app on a mobile device. All ages are welcome, and participants ages 14 and under will need to be accompanied by an adult. Preregistration is required. Space is limited.

What's the Buzz?
Tuesday, April 30th | 10:00 am - 11:30 am
It’s Spring and nature is busy again! Birds are starting to build their nests; frogs have emerged from their winter sleep and the insects are buzzing with excitement. Shoots of green are appearing in the trees, meadows, and parks. We will explore the life cycles of bees and flowers in this informative and fun class. The children will plant their own flowers and learn the basics of gardening. It’s the season! Space is limited.

Animal Care Trainee
Sunday, May 5th | 10:30 am - 12:30 pm
Would you like to help us care for APEC’s animals? This program introduces children to the unique responsibility of being an animal caretaker. Participants will learn about the needs of our animal ambassadors, and gain hands-on experience in feeding, brushing, and cleaning them. They will also learn the first steps of researching and understanding what animal is best fit for lifestyle and family. Space is limited.

Fluid Art
Sunday, May 5th | 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
“Nothing’s better than an adventure with colors!"
Join Jammin Canvas as we explore the trendy new art techniques of Fluid Art. No brushes are used! This is a swipe and balloon smash to create this beautiful effect of flowers coming out of the marsh. Your creation will make a beautiful gift for mom, a special aunt, or grandmother. We will be working with paint so wear an old T-shirt or smock! All materials provided. Spots are limited. Self Defense Basics
Friday, May 10th | 5:30 pm - 6:45 pm
Join Coaches Butch and Amanda Rinaldi from Butch's Boxing and MMA to learn some basic self-defense tactics. Learn important tips on situational awareness and practical responses to physical threats, followed by a Q&A session for improving your “street smarts.” Butch is a former Marine, bouncer, and boxing Coach. Amanda is a seasoned boxer who has participated in several amateur boxing bouts, winning the title of New Jersey Golden Gloves Champion 2009. Pre-registration required. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Spots are limited.

Story Time Yoga for Lil' Yogis - May
Saturday, May 11th | 9:30 am - 10:15 am
Celebrate Spring and Mother’s Day with Yogi Sam, certified Yoga Instructor, for a story time yogadventure! Yogi Sam will bring movement, song, and playfulness together in a fun, engaging way. Children will use props, as well as their bodies to practice yoga postures and games with their family member. Yoga mats will be provided if you don’t have your own to bring to class. One parent per child. Spots are limited.

The environmental center is located in Alley Pond Park, surrounded by lush nature trails where visitors can enjoy NYC's natural landscapes.
