Vet Tech 101 - Year of the Rabbit

Interested in learning all about rabbits during this Lunar New Year? 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit, so come join us to explore the anatomy of rabbits, their behavior, diet, and needs that a vet technician would know about. Students will meet and care for a variety of our bunnies and discover differences between wild and domesticated rabbits as well. Space is limited.

Fused Glass Workshop

Join Naomi Rabinowitz, artist, and jewelry designer, for a fun afternoon making fused glass jewelry. Participants will have the opportunity to make colorful necklaces, pins, magnets, earrings, or rings -- and learn the basics of fused glass art. Make some holiday gifts creating with glass. Ms. Rabinowitz will fire your piece and you will be able to pick it up at APEC – date to be given at workshop. All material will be provided.

Friends and family cpr training
Friday, February 10th | 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
This course, led by members of the Glen Oaks Volunteer Ambulance Corps, teaches this AHA training the lifesaving skills of hands-only CPR and is for people who want to learn CPR but do not need a CPR course completion card to meet a job requirement.
This is ideal for new parents, grandparents, babysitters and others interested in learning how to save a life. Each student will receive a take home workbook for future reference. Free childcare provided. Light refreshments. Funds raised from this program will go towards children’s programming and animal care. Spots are limited. Ages: Adults & children 14+ | $10 per person |
Sunset Hike for Nature Lovers

Your evening begins under the twinkling stars with Jocelyn Perez, Herbalists Without Borders (HWB) NYC Queens Chapter Coordinator. Beneath the starlight you will take a quiet stroll along our trails where Jocelyn will be citing Valentine lore related to local flora and pointing out hearts in nature. Warm up after the walk inside the Center. Visit our animal room and enjoy a hot chocolate bar. Dress for the weather. Registration required.

I Love Animals

Vet Tech 101 - Teeth and Beaks

Join us for this Vet Tech class focusing on dental and beak health! Students will learn about how healthy mouth parts can lead to longer and happier lives, what contributes to healthy dentition and beaks, and what disorders or illnesses our animals may suffer from if they do not receive regular maintenance. They will also learn how to check to make sure the animals are receiving the right kind of dental care by giving them examinations. Our Vet Tech students will learn the ins and outs of keeping some of the most common pet animals in peak medical condition. Space is limited.

Winter mystery science adventures - 3 class series
Tuesday, February 21st - Thursday, February 23rd | 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm
Using mysteries and science demonstrations children will be engaged in learning about where bugs go in the Winter, how polar animals survive the cold, and why is snow white. The afternoons will feature exciting group activities, interesting lab experiments, wacky winter literacy, winter themed games and crafts, animal meet and greet, and more! Children should bring a snack and bottled water each day.

I Want to Be a Vet

Aspiring veterinarians will enjoy learning about the many aspects of veterinary care. Veterinarians provide different medical care for different types of animals depending on their patients-zoo animals, farm animals or pets! Children will learn about the special needs of a variety of APEC’s Animal Ambassadors and observe them up-close.

Participants will learn about the needs of our animal ambassadors, and gain hands-on experience in feeding, brushing, and cleaning them. They will also learn the first steps of researching and understanding what animal is best fit for lifestyle and family. Space is limited.

Winter bird walk owl prowl

Grab your binoculars and join an experienced birder and naturalist for a walk through different areas of Alley Pond Park in search of owls. Learn how to identify birds by sight and listen for bird species during this two hour walk. Dress for the weather. Open to birders of all levels.

Restorative yoga and meditation morning

Sam is the founder of Yogadventures. She has been combining art, vinyasa, and mindfulness for over a decade to create a meaningful class experience for people of all ages and abilities. Join her for a morning of gentle vinyasa and meditation. Participants will have the option to close their practice with a writing prompt related to self-care. Bring your mat and bottle of water. Story Time yoga for lil' yogis

Forest therapy walk

Join Linda Lombardo, certified forest therapy guide as she leads you along the trails of Alley Pond Park, engaging with you through mindfulness activities to connect with nature’s healing and restorative power. This is the time of the year that we begin to think about Spring. March is also an Equinox month. Around the equinox, day and night are shifting their presence. A shared relationship of light and dark. Whether forest art or an experiential scavenger hunt, we’ll use our senses to look for treasures in the forest or along the trail. A pine needle tea infused with seasonal fruit will be served at the end of the walk.

Welcome spring with a fun class about nature’s favorite color. Enjoy a read aloud of Green by Laura Vaccaro Seeger, play a game about camouflage, and make a collage with green materials. Vet Tech 101 - Nutrition

Come join us for this Vet Tech class focusing on nutrition! They will focus on the nutritional needs of our animals and optimal dietary choices for body weight, bone health, and organ health. Students will also learn how to check to make sure the animals are receiving the right amount of nutrition by giving them examinations and will feed a variety of animals in our care. Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day weekend by going green. Join Jocelyn Perez Blanco, Herbalists Without Borders (HWB) NYC Queens Chapter Coordinator, for a night hike that will lead us in search for good luck along the trails of Alley Pond Park. We will also be celebrating the upcoming beginning of Spring. Jocelyn will tell us about the many plants in our park that are associated with love and luck, along with species harkening the change of the season. Dress for the weather. Spots are limited.

Vet Tech 101 - Anatomy and Vet Sketches

Animal anatomy is the foundation of veterinary studies to understand more complex processes of the body. Students will get to learn about different skeletal structures and how to identify parts of animal bodies. Some veterinary illustrations will be practiced with animal observation sketches. They will also learn how to check to make sure the animals have healthy bones and mobility by giving them examinations.
