Think outside the box for a cool winter themed week of intriguing learning and fun in a relaxed environment. Children will participate in themed days that will include literacy, STEM activities/experiments, games, winter hikes, animal meet and greet and more. Daily themes include – winter fables, winter scientists, winter puns (it’s snow laughing matter!), and frosty science. Children must wear a mask for the entire program. Children should bring a snack and labeled water. Dress appropriately as part of this program will take place outdoors, weather permitting.

Do you enjoy walking in a winter wonderland? Through this course, we will examine the seasonal adaptations of a variety of animals and explore how they seek out a living in the harshest season of the year. Together we will investigate the strange migratory instincts of birds, whales, and butterflies and the hibernating habits of chipmunks, bears, and reptiles. Lastly, we will be on the lookout for animals that stay active year-round on our multiple nature walks. Crafts, scavenger hunts, and STEM activities will be included! Please dress warmly and bring snacks and a labeled bottle of water. Participants are required to wear masks for the entire program.

Kindergarten Kids will love to stay and play at APEC during this fun program! Alphabet Bingo, letter matching, animal songs, and a great book will be shared in class. Students will also examine animal skeletons and enjoy an up-close observation of 3 different live animals. Then, we will wrap up the class with a brisk outdoor nature walk. Limited to 8 students. Masks must be worn for the entire program.

Although it is chilly outside, many animals are still active! We can learn a lot about animals in winter by examining clues they leave behind. Animal tracks, scat, fur, seed shells, and feathers can often be spotted in nature. Find out about critter clues and observe a rabbit and bird in this fun science class. Come dressed for a winter walk to see if any critter clues can be found on the trails. Limited to 6 parent/child pairs. ONE adult per child. Masks must be worn by all adults and children for the entire program.

Featuring the book, The Magic of the Forest – A Tale of Kindness, Friendship and Courage by Jacqueline Crivello, this interactive story walk will begin at the front of the building (dress appropriately). Children will listen to this beautiful story written by a nature photographer, that tells an extraordinary story of a little boy, his wise grandmother, and a secret forest friend. At various stopping points along the trail, children will have an opportunity to see hands on biofacts relating to this enchanting story. Following the walk, children will be able to chat live, via Zoom, with the author about the book. One of APEC’s animal ambassadors will delight the children back at the Center for a memorable afternoon. Children are required to wear masks for the entire program. Children will enjoy a cup of hot cocoa during the walk. Limited to 8 participants. Everyone will go home with their own copy of this book.

Young readers will gather in a relaxed atmosphere to take turns reading a “book of the month” together. A copy of the book will be given to each child and an APEC educator will engage and encourage the children as they read. The program includes a related activity and animal meet and greet. Your child will leave with a brand-new book each month, to enhance their at home library. Children must wear a mask for the entire program. A certificate of completion will be issued at the end of the series. Limited to 6 participants.

Ever wondered how our beautiful city got so tall? Get ready to take your mind to new heights in this class about the history and physics of skyscraper architecture! You will learn about the engineering power of strong shapes and create several different towers using a variety of building materials. We will finish with a fan favorite-Jenga! Who said science couldn’t be fun?! Masks must be worn by all children for the entire program.

Sustainability: Changing and Saving the World: Over the course of this program, students will develop an understanding of sustainable principles and practices and contribute to APEC’s new green initiatives!
Week 1, February 2nd Renewable Green Energy - We start the class off with a look into the miraculous ways in which people harness the power of atomic bonds, geothermal heat, wind, water, sunlight, and tides. Week 2, February 9th. The Thirst for Water Conservation - We will see how our daily demand for freshwater affects our world. We will also learn how recent advances in sustainable water use have allowed deserts to bloom and human populations to flourish as never before. Week 3, February 23th. Feeding the World – With more than eight billion people now living on our planet, how has our insatiable desire for meat affected the Earth? Is a vegan diet really more sustainable and why? Will your burger one day, be made with BUGS? There’s only one way to find out- so join us! Participants must wear a mask for the entire program. Limited to 10 individuals. Join Jammin Canvas artist, Cheryl Fruchter, to learn different techniques and create your own take home art pieces. You will have a wide choice of frames, magnets, keychains and glass cubes to choose from. Discover how to mix paints, choosing your own color scheme. Have a fun paint experience and watch what comes out of a paint pour. All supplies and a few surprises included! You may bring your own smock. Pre-registration is required.
